The advice to introduce cereal as a first food is one of the reasons I decided to write my book, because this advice is causing a cycle of ill health. It is actually one the most problematic foods we could be introducing to our children. This recommendation is not based on science or tradition.
1. Cereals are processed, man-made foods with very little nutritional value.
2. Our bodies do not have the enzymes (pancreatic amylase) to effectively breakdown grains until age 2 when the pancreas reaches full maturation. This can cause problems because we are feeding our children food that it cannot effectively breakdown and metabolize (indigestible food), which will sit in the digestive tract, not allowing them to absorb nutrients that they need for proper growth and development.
3. Many cereals are contaminated with toxins and heavy metals.
