Patients will often ask me, how do I get back on track with a healthy diet. These are patients that typically followed the diet plan for a period of time then slowly fell back into old habits. They know they need to get back on track with their diet but they are having a challenging time doing so.

Here are some tactics to get back on track for healthy eating:

  1. Re-visit your why. To be healthier, to improve your digestion, to improve your immune system, to improve your hormones to improve your chronic disease, to improve you metabolism, to improve your energy. Any time you stray away from the diet, remind yourself why you are making these healthy changes.
  2. Set up an environment for success. Remove the junk food, the temptations, your cheat foods. Buy the right foods and have them readily available.
  3. It’s ok if you aren’t perfect. You want to make healthy decisions on a consistent basis. No need to be hard on yourself if you don’t follow the healthy eating plan exactly, but work on continuously making good decisions that will improve your health.
  4. Find a way to be accountable. Whether you have a partner or friend that is supporting your health journey. Or if you are part of a Facebook group with people who have the same goals as you and everyone in the group can support each other. Or if you are doing the ketogenic diet, then measure your ketones and blood sugar and record them. Some way to keep you on track that works well for you.
  5. Be kind to yourself and your body and part of that is feeding yourself healthy foods. Healthy eating is a way to nurture your body.
