Food Allergies:
IgE Reaction
Sudden reaction, potentially life-threatening reaction to certain food. Mediated by immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies. Requires life-long avoidance (ie. Peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish).
IgG Delayed Reaction
There are delayed reactions mediated by a different antibody called immunoglobulin G (IgG), which take hours or even days to develop and can be dose dependent. If the immune system is unable to move out the IgG-antigen complexes quickly enough, they start to build up in the body’s tissues and create inflammation.
Food Intolerances:
Inability to digest specific food due to genetics or acquired lack of enzymes. An example is lactose intolerance due to lack of lactase or histamine intolerance due to lack of histamine degrading enzymes.
Avoid food, supplementing with enzymes, repairing damage to gut and flora that may have precipitated or worsened the intolerance.
Food Sensitivity:
Often more difficult to decipher. Feels worse when you eat the specific food and better when you do not. Often you will experience symptoms within 30hrs of consuming the specific food. The offending food is causing inflammation in the body. Can occur due to low digestive enzymes or stomach acid or gut dysbiosis. Can be cleared up by healing the gut. Sometimes it is best to just avoid the trigger foods.
